Dear Gwen,
Recently I have had the overwhelming desire to live in a box. I've dropped out of school, trashed my computer, and disconnected my phone... that is why I am sending you this letter via the mail. I am finally feeling a little bit better, but I am afraid that as soon as I go back to the real world, I'll want to live in a box again. Please help!
Sincerely,
Overwhelmed
Overwhelmed,
There have been many studies done on these types of feelings. In a recent case study done by YogueIN's research company, TRUTHzone LLC, researchers found that the desire to live in a box is directly related
to the amount of time any given person spends with brutal people.
You'll notice that by the fourth minute in the company of a
brutal person, most participants had a very strong desire to live in a box, a desire manifested by way of some sort of drastic action. That would explain the steps you took of dropping out of school and destroying your computer etc.
In order to diminish those "box living" feelings, you don't need to cut everyone out. We suggest making a list of the people you see on a daily basis and next to each name writing down exactly how that person makes you feel. Here is an example:
Olivia - Motivated/Focused
Caroline - Youthful/Happy
Lynn - Unwanted/ Unloved
Natalie - Valued/Funny
Once you've written this list you'll be able to see more clearly the effect that your daily interactions are having on your life. This same list can be made using activities, example:
On The Phone With Lauren - Listened to/Cared about
Working out - Energized/Skinny
At Work - Bored/Dying inside
The people and activities that cause you to primarily feel negative emotions-- well, those are the things that you need to remove.
Overwhelmed, we know the desire to live in a box is a very real, we hope this helps!
xoxo
Gwen
