According to a recent article in the Huffington Post, Haitian officials were warned in 2008 that an earthquake of this magnitude was coming. Unfortunately because of the impoverished circumstances of the country, even years in advance, there was nothing they could do.
One of the main scientists who issued the warning about the forthcoming earthquakes remarked that,
"Haiti's government has so many other problems that when you give sort of an unspecific prediction about an earthquake threat they just don't have the resources to deal with that sort of thing,"
This is so sad to us. Hopefully with the focus on Haiti we'll be able to help out beyond just disaster relief.
